Special Discovery Tour
Join Kevin Hui on this personal discovery journey of the Pearl River Delta region in Southern China, exploring the cities of Hong Kong 香港, Shenzhen 深圳, Guangzhou 广州 and Macau 澳門. Originally a native of Hong Kong where he was born, Kevin is familiar with Cantonese food and culture.
Despite being one of the most densely populated and urbanized regions in the world, and is considered a megacity by numerous scholars, there are a surprising number of villages and parks with some incredible new, finer-grain, small scale architecture that were built in the last 5 years to be explored as well as the mega projects from both local and international architects.
This 11 days tour will be a much smaller selected group than usual, traveling with Kevin. There will be a lot of walking and public transport use. A certain basic level of fitness is required and it is best suited for architects, architecture graduates, architecture students, enthusiasts and independent travellers.
We will start and based initially in Hong Kong for 3 days before going to explore Shenzhen across the border and its various enclaves for another 4 days. A quick train ride to Guangzhou to see the cultural capital of Cantonese culture and going on a day trip to see Shawan Ancient Town which is a fine example of traditional Lingnan architecture of the region. We will finish the tour in the former Portuguese colony of Macau, where they are some fascinating contrast of urbanism, from the UNESCO World Heritage Listed old city to the mega projects of the gambling hub. The tour will end back in Hong Kong.
