scandinavia
12 - 24 June 2024
Expanding on and coupling with our very popular Archimarathon Finland, this intensive 13 days tour focuses on the Modern and contemporary architecture of Denmark, Norway and Sweden.
The Scandinavian design philosophy is characterized by simplicity and functionality. This approach extends to architecture, where the aesthetic of buildings emphasizes elegant, light-filled spaces, with deep connection to nature. The result is architecture that is both beautiful and highly functional, enhancing the quality of life for its users.
Scandinavian cities are known for their livable urban design and public spaces that encourage social interaction and community engagement. Architects and urban planners design spaces that are accessible, inclusive, and human-centered, fostering a sense of community and well-being.
There will be a lot of walking and public transport use. We need to travel light. A certain basic level of fitness is required and it is best suited for architecture graduates, architecture students, architects, enthusiasts and independent travellers.
From local masters such as Jørn Utzon, Gunnar Asplund, Sigurd Lewerentz, Sverre Fehn, Arne Jacobsen, Ralph Erskine and contemporary super stars such as Bjarke Ingels, 3XN, Snøhetta, Gert Wingårdh, Schmidt Hammer Lassen, Dorte Mandrup, Henning Larsen, Lundgaar & Tranberg etc.,
…to international stars such as Alvar Aalto, OMA, Zaha Hadid, Jean Nouvel, Renzo Piano, Kengo Kuma, MVRDV, Rafael Moneo, Santiago Calatrava etc.

Copenhagen + Malmö
We will spend a few days exploring the beautiful Danish capital city, its neighbourhoods and the surrounding regions such as Helsingnør, including a visit to Louisiana Museum of Modern Art which has been hailed as one of the most beautiful museums in the world. We will also be heading across the border on the other side of Øresund to the little town of Klippan to see some of the seminal works by Sigurd Lewerentz as well as the recent developments in the city of Malmö in southern Sweden.
Odense + Aarhus + Aalborg
Making our way to Denmark’s second largest city Aarhus, we will make a quick stop in the city of Odense to visit the new Hans Christian Andersen House Museum by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma. We will be spending a couple of days in Aarhus visiting its fabulous museums and checking out the recent dock side developments. Onwards to Aalborg for an afternoon at Kunsten Museum of Modern Art by the Finnish architect Alvar Aalto and the Utzon Center by Denmark’s very own Jørn Utzon.
Stockholm
Arguably one of the most beautiful capital cities in the world, the archipelagos that make up the city of Stockholm is not only the cultural, political, and economic centre of Sweden but also the largest city in the Scandinavian region by population. Apart from the various architecture offerings in the city, we will also be visiting the UNESCO listed architecture and landscape masterpiece, Woodland Cemetery by Gunnar Asplund and Sigurd Lewerentz as well as the Stockholm University Frescati Campus by Ralph Erskine.
Whilst the Scandinavia tour officially ends in Stockholm, some could choose to continue the journey and join up with Archimarathon Finland or just a leisurely round trip by catching the gigantic Silja ferry across to Helsinki, experiencing the endless archipelagos and arriving Helsinki through the narrow heads into Helsinki harbour.
